Research and Development      Institutional Collaboration

MDS Nordion collaborates with institutions and academia around the world.

Canadian Irradiation Centre

The Canadian Irradiation Centre (CIC) is a cooperative project between MDS Nordion and the Université du Québec, Institut Armand-Frappier. The collaboration offers a range of irradiation services including training, testing, and development. The CIC's objectives are to develop, demonstrate, and promote irradiation processing technology by:

  • Conducting applied gamma irradiation research and testing
  • Training technical, scientific, operations, and regulatory personnel
  • Providing contract irradiation services

University of Liège

MDS Nordion is collaborating with the University of Liège (ULG) on innovative positron emitting tomography (PET) molecular imaging agents. Glucotrace® (F-18 FDG) is available regionally in Europe and is used to study metabolism in the brain and heart and for detection of epilepsy and various tumors.

University of Ottawa Heart Institute

MDS Nordion is collaborating with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) Canada's largest cardiovascular health centre, to establish a Molecular Imaging Centre of Excellence to advance cardiology research.

Molecular imaging is an emerging technology that differs from traditional medical imaging as it examines changes at the molecular level within the body, to support early disease detection and treatment assessment. MDS Nordion is investing an estimated U.S. $2.2 million in this new centre, which is equipped with the research and development radiochemistry laboratory that supports cardiology research.

This collaboration represents a unique opportunity to expand MDS Nordion's molecular imaging business. The new centre enables the two organizations to collaborate on joint cardiology research, using the latest in molecular imaging technology. Through this collaboration, MDS Nordion will provide its innovative molecular imaging services to large pharmaceutical companies to help them bring promising new drugs to market faster and with less cost.

TRIUMF

TRIUMF, which is a consortium of leading Canadian universities and located on the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus, operates the world's largest cyclotron to carry out particle physics research. MDS Nordion’s 30-year commercial relationship with TRIUMF has resulted in a number of pioneering developments in molecular imaging technology. These developments include the production of high-purity iodine-123 for which MDS Nordion and TRIUMF received the Canada Award for Business Excellence, and a patented high volume production method for palladium-103. In turn, this work has allowed us to forge important partnerships with biopharmaceutical companies for the manufacture of new products currently in advanced clinical development, notably for use in diagnosing cardiac disease and neurological disorders.

In addition, MDS Nordion and TRIUMF are focusing on a future of innovative research and development activities in the areas of radiochemistry and biology that will explore new approaches for imaging, treatment and diagnosis of disease. For the first time, TRIUMF researchers and MDS Nordion scientists will jointly pursue lines of inquiry in common facilities to identify and develop new products, particularly those that add significant value to the medical isotopes presently produced.

This best-practice partnership is a demonstration of public, commercial and academic organizations coming together for the benefit of global health care. It has placed Canada at the forefront of nuclear medicine and continues to touch the lives of over 40,000 patients every week around the world.
